Product Information

Name:
1,2,5,6-Tetrabromocyclooctane
Synonyms:
  • Cyclooctane, 1,2,5,6-Tetrabromo-
  • NSC 167079
Description:

1,2,5,6-Tetrabromocyclooctane is a model species in cell biology. It is used to study the effects of reactive oxygen species on mitochondrial function. 1,2,5,6-Tetrabromocyclooctane is covalently bonded with cysteine residues in the mitochondrial membrane and prevents the oxidation of lipids in this area. The accumulation of reactive oxygen species causes mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis by activating caspase-9 and increasing insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) expression. This compound has been shown to have a number of different isomers that have different effects on cells.
