2-(m-Hydroxyphenyl)hydracrylic acid-D4 (HPA-D4) is a diagnostic agent that can be used to detect the serotonergic system in rats. HPA-D4 is an acid that is found in urine samples and has been detected in the serum of patients with Parkinson's disease. The 2-(m-Hydroxyphenyl)hydracrylic acid-D4 has been shown to inhibit serine protease activity by competitive inhibition of the active site, and may be related to phenolic acid. This compound is a dietary component and is also present in cocoa beans. It has been shown to have pharmacokinetics properties similar to those of fluoxetine and amitriptyline, which are used as antidepressant drugs.
