Description:

4-Methyl-4-trichloromethyl-2,5-cyclohexadien-1-one is an isomeric mixture of cyclohexadienones. It has a constant boiling point and melting point, and a zwitterionic structure. The postulated structure for this molecule shows that the chlorine atoms are not attached to the same carbon atom. 4-Methyl-4-trichloromethyl-2,5-cyclohexadienone crystallizes from benzene as needle crystals. Preparative methods include reaction with chlorine in chloroform or with sodium hydroxide in ethanol. The skeleton of this molecule consists of a 6 carbon ring with two methyl groups on carbons 4 and 5. Monomers can be formed by spontaneous addition of hydrogen chloride to the molecule or by reductive elimination from the parent compound. Anions may be formed through reactions with strong bases such as potassium hydroxide or sodium hydride
