Hexadecyl sulfide is a colorless liquid with a viscosity of 2.8 mm2/s at 25 °C and an acidic odor that is soluble in water and insoluble in ether. It is a member of the group of aliphatic hydrocarbons, which are composed primarily of chains of carbon atoms bonded to hydrogen atoms. Hexadecyl sulfide has been used as a reactant for molybdenum and hydrochloric acid in the synthesis of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride. It also reacts with naphthalene and hydroxyl groups to form hexadecane, monolayers, or particles.
