Ethyl 5-amino-3-thioxo-3H-1,2-dithiole-4-carboxylate is a neuroprotective agent with the ability to inhibit the uptake of dopamine by the dopaminergic neurons in the brain. It is used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This drug has also been shown to be effective in preventing or reducing reactive oxygen species induced apoptosis in cells. Ethyl 5-amino-3-thioxo-3H-1,2-dithiole-4-carboxylate binds to a pharmacophore that is common to many different types of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. The binding site is located on an enzyme called catalytic subunit (CAS), which can be found either free or bound to another protein. CAS is responsible
