Trifluoroacetic acid is a reactive organic solvent that is used in the synthesis of 3-(2-hydroxypropyl)-5-methyl-2-oxazolidinone. Trifluoroacetic acid reacts with a variety of metal salts to form metal trifluoroacetates, including potassium phosphate. The reaction can be performed in an inert solvent such as orthophosphoric acid or other phosphoric acid derivatives. The reaction proceeds at room temperature and is not affected by impurities. Potassium phosphate trifluoroacetate can be purified by recrystallization or sublimation.
