Description:

2-Ethyl Isonicotinamide is a potential drug target for tuberculosis. It is a molecule that is found in plasma from humans and has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. 2-Ethyl Isonicotinamide binds to sulfonic acid groups on the surface of the bacteria, which are potential drug targets for tuberculosis. The reactive site of this molecule has been determined by structural analysis and crystallography to be its ethionamide moiety. This reactive site is important for binding to human immunodeficency virus (HIV). It is also believed that 2-ethyl isonicotinamide may act as a competitive inhibitor with other anti-tuberculosis drugs such as ethionamide, a component of the standard treatment regimen for tuberculosis, through binding to the same site on M. tuberculosis.
