1,2-Dimethylcyclobutane-1,2-dicarboxylate is a paramagnetic molecule that has unpaired electrons. The unpaired electrons are located on the 2p orbitals of the carbon atom and they are responsible for the paramagnetism. The electron spins interact with each other in a process called spin-spin coupling. This interaction is driven by the magnetic field gradient and it can be calculated by using computational methods. A singlet state is formed when two triplets (one electron from each triplet) combine to form an energy level with a total spin of zero. When 1,2-dimethylcyclobutane-1,2-dicarboxylate interacts with vinyl acetate, it forms a transition state that has an increase in entropy.
