2-Chloro-N-methylbenzamide is an aldoxime that reacts with chlorophosphate to give nitriles. It is used as an efficient and selective reagent for the preparation of diethyl amides and ketoximes, which are intermediates in the synthesis of phosphonates. 2-Chloro-N-methylbenzamide can be prepared by the reaction of dimethyl aldoxime with methyl iodide in the presence of sodium ethoxide. The product may be dehydrated to form 2-chloro-N-methylbenzamide, which has been shown to react with phosphorus trichloride to produce phosphonates.
