The deuterated form of 1-chloro-4-nonyne has been shown to react with silver ions to produce nitrogen oxide, which can then be converted into nitric acid. This conversion process can also take place with nitrogen oxide in the presence of sodium methoxide as a catalyst, producing isomerization products of 1-chloro-4-nonyne.
