5-Amino-3-(1-methyl-2-phenylethyl)-2,3-dihydro-1,2,3-oxadiazol-2-ium chloride is an antihypertensive drug that belongs to the class of nitrosourea derivatives. It is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to 5-aminoimidazole in vivo. 5AIU inhibits the reuptake of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) by blocking the GABA transporter and thus increasing levels of GABA in the synaptic cleft. This leads to inhibition of postsynaptic neurons and increased inhibition at central synapses. 5AIU has a high efficiency and can be used as an anesthetic agent or as a pressor drug when combined with other drugs.
