Methyl diphenylacetate is an enolate that is resistant to light and reacts with nucleophiles such as potassium t-butoxide to form acetate. Methyl diphenylacetate has been shown to be an antifungal agent with a broad spectrum of activity against a number of fungi, including Candida albicans. Methyl diphenylacetate has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. It inhibits the histone deacetylase enzyme, which is involved in the regulation of gene expression. This drug may be able to treat Alzheimer's disease by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase (AChE), which is involved in nerve transmission, and reducing the amount of amyloid beta proteins that accumulate on neurons.
Methyl diphenylacetate has been found to inhibit AChE by binding reversibly and competitively at the active site, interfering with choline transport into cells and preventing acetylcholine release.
