2,3,3-Trimethyl-5-nitro-3H-indole is an indolium compound that is used as a bathochromic emulsion stain. It has been shown to have a sensitivity of about 100 nm per mole and the sensitivity can be increased by light exposure or trimethylation. 2,3,3-Trimethyl-5-nitro-3H-indole has been used in electrophotography for high resolution separation of nitro compounds and in the analysis of sulphonates. This compound also shows high sensitivity when used as a fluorescent indicator in liquid chromatography.
