Neothorin is a molecule that has been used in analytical chemistry as a reagent for the determination of flow rate. It has also been used to determine the presence of anions such as chloride and hydroxyl groups. Neothorin is formed by the reaction of ammonium lactate with zirconium, which produces an ion-exchange process. This reaction leads to a chelate ring with a chloride and two hydroxyl groups. The protrusion forms when ammonium nitrate is mixed with neothorin, which causes ion-exchange reactions and releases ammonia gas.
