Description

Methyl 2-cyano-3-phenylacrylate is a polymerization product of methylcyanocuprate and phenylacrylic acid. It is copolymerized with sodium nitrate to form poly(methyl 2-cyano-3-phenylacrylate) sodium salt. This polymer has been used as an efficient method for synthesizing cyclopentenes, which are useful monomers in organic synthesis. The copolymerization reaction can be carried out at room temperature with the use of a plate test. This product is also active methylene and can be used in condensation reactions with other molecules.
Methyl 2-cyano-3-phenylacrylate is not toxic to bacteria such as typhimurium and has been shown to be effective against strains that are resistant to penicillin, ampicillin, and erythromycin.
