Methyl n-octyl sulfide is an organic solvent that is used in the production of polymers. It is a colorless liquid with a high boiling point, low toxicity, and a strong odor. Methyl n-octyl sulfide is used for the cationic polymerization of acrylic acid esters, vinyl monomers, and other compounds. A solution of methyl n-octyl sulfide reacts with UV light to generate free radicals that initiate the polymerization process. As a result, it can be used as a photoinitiator for these reactions. Methyl n-octyl sulfide has also been shown to have antioxidant properties and to protect cells from oxidative stress.
Methyl n-Octyl Sulfide has also been shown to form conjugates with flavins and sulfoxides which are important for electron transport in cellular respiration.
