Product Information
Ethoxzolamide is a sulfamate drug that is used as an ocular hypotensive agent. It inhibits the activity of carbonic anhydrase in the cytoplasm of cells, and prevents the formation of bicarbonate ions, which are necessary for cellular hydration. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of hydrogen ions and a decrease in pH within cells, resulting in decreased cell volume and pressure. Ethoxzolamide has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation by blocking cyclooxygenase (COX) activity, which leads to decreased production of prostaglandins that are responsible for blood clotting. The mechanism by which ethoxzolamide blocks COX activity is not clear, but it may be due to inhibition of protein synthesis or inhibition of COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes.
