Product Information

Name:
Methyl isonicotinate N-oxide
Synonyms:
  • 4-Pyridinecarboxylic acid, methyl ester, 1-oxide
  • Methyl isonicotinate 1-oxide
Description:

Methyl isonicotinate N-oxide (MIO) is an organic compound that belongs to the group of esters. It is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of approximately 110°C. MIO has been synthesized by reacting 4-cyanopyridine with methyl isonicotinate in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid and potassium carbonate, followed by purification by recrystallization from hot water. Yields are typically around 50%. The dihedral angle between the two molecules ranges from 28° to 30°. The amino-acid side chain can be either prochiral or chiral, depending on the orientation of the methyl group in relation to the nitrogen atom. Chloride ions act as nucleophiles and attack the carbonyl carbon, displacing one of the hydrogens to form a chloride ion and an enolate anion:

The stereoisomers are R/S = 1:1
