2-Aminoazulene-1,3-dicarbonitrile is a synthetic compound that inhibits the growth of protozoan parasites and bacteria. It is active against the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum and other protozoan parasites such as Leishmania sp., Toxoplasma gondii, Trypanosoma cruzi and Trichomonas vaginalis. 2-Aminoazulene-1,3-dicarbonitrile has also been shown to be effective in vitro against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus cereus. This drug is metabolized by thioguanine N7-methyltransferase to form methylthiouracil (MTU) and 2-aminoazulene 1,3-dicarbonitrile monomethyl ether (ADCME). The terminal half life of ADCME is about 3 hours
