Cyclopentane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid is a compound that binds to Zn2+ ions with high affinity. It is used as an organic solvent in the manufacture of polyurethanes and other organic compounds. Cyclopentane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid also has functional groups that can react with amides or alkynes. This property makes it useful in supramolecular chemistry. This compound also reacts with a ligand to form a neutral complex that is fluorescent when irradiated with UV light. In nature this compound is found in plants and fungi. It has been shown to be effective against solid tumours in laboratory animals and has been proposed as a possible anticancer drug. Cyclopentane-1,2,3,4-tetracarboxylic acid can be prepared by dehydration of cyclopentanone according to the following equation:
