1-[2,6-bis(benzyloxy)phenyl]ethan-1-one is a potent inhibitor of melanin synthesis. It has been used in the modelling industry to produce a variety of skin tones and colours. 1-[2,6-bis(benzyloxy)phenyl]ethan-1-one was first isolated from the fungal species Lunata as well as from Curvularia lunata and Curvularia protuberata. The compound has also been found in plants such as the plant pathogen Cercospora zea-maydis and the human pathogen Candida albicans. The biosynthesis of 1-[2,6-bis(benzyloxy)phenyl]ethan-1-one starts with the conversion of phenol into catechol by an unknown enzyme.
