22-NHC is a molecule that binds to the ATP-binding cassette transporter. It has been shown to have potent inhibitory activity against the production of oxysterols and is capable of inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species in cells. This may be due to its ability to activate cellular abt-199, which is an enzyme that breaks down oxysterols. 22-NHC also inhibits the activation of cancer, as well as mitochondrial cytochrome. The chemical nature of this molecule is still being studied, but it has been postulated that it may be a hydroxyl group or an extracellular side chain cleavage product.
