Azatadine is an H1 receptor antagonist that inhibits the histamine-induced bronchoconstriction. It has been shown to be effective in vivo in a model of allergic airway inflammation and also has anti-inflammatory properties. Azatadine is used to treat chronic pulmonary disorders such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and allergic rhinitis. The drug binds to voltage-dependent calcium channels and prevents the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells and eosinophils by inhibiting the production of arachidonic acid. This drug also has anticholinergic properties due to its ability to inhibit acetylcholine release from cholinergic nerve endings. Azatadine is available in oral tablet form, which can be taken with or without food.
