(9Z,12Z)-Octadeca-9,12-dienamide is a lipid molecule that is structurally similar to linoleamide. It has been shown to inhibit cholesterol synthesis in vitro and in vivo by competitively inhibiting the enzyme cholesterol esterase. This inhibition leads to a decrease in intracellular levels of free cholesterol and an increase in intracellular levels of free fatty acids. (9Z,12Z)-Octadeca-9,12-dienamide also inhibits the uptake of low density lipoproteins by macrophages and reduces the development of atherosclerosis. This compound is insoluble at physiological pH and therefore cannot be administered orally. However, it can be delivered via injection or intravenously as a lipid particle complex with cyclodextrin.
