3-Ethyl-5-methylpyridine is a natural product that contains an indole alkaloid moiety. It can be found in the plant Plumeria rubra, which is native to the Caribbean region and South America. 3-Ethyl-5-methylpyridine has been shown to have magnetic properties, as well as electronic spectra that are similar to those of oxindole alkaloids. The molecule has been studied for its antiprotozoal activities and its nature as an inhibitor of mevalonate biosynthesis. 3-Ethyl-5-methylpyridine has also been shown to inhibit azide production by bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium.
