4-Oxo-cyclopentane-trans-1,2-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester is a synthetic compound that has been shown to have antiproliferative effects on human prostate cancer cells. It inhibits the production of fatty acids and disrupts the synthesis of esters. This compound also causes cell death by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential and intracellular calcium concentration, ultimately leading to apoptosis. 4-Oxo-cyclopentane-trans-1,2-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester has been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro and in vivo, but it is not active against Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli.
