Ethyl (E)-3-(3-pyridinyl)-2-propenoate is a modification of the natural compound 3-(3-pyridinyl)-2-propenal. It has been shown to inhibit lung carcinoma cells by inducing apoptosis, which is a form of programmed cell death. This modification causes changes in the stability and reactivity of the molecule that may be due to its increased susceptibility to β-unsaturated aldehydes. Ethyl (E)-3-(3-pyridinyl)-2-propenoate is an analog of other molecules that have been used as cancer treatment agents in humans and animals, such as prostaglandin synthons and enaminones. The synthetic route for this molecule is through the reaction of piperidine with synthons or biomimetic compounds.
