4-Amino-1-phenyl-2(1H)-pyrimidinone is a prodrug that is converted to its active form, aminopyrine, by esterases in the body. Aminopyrine is used as a treatment for hepatitis and other viral infections. It is also used in combination with other drugs in order to prevent dehydration. 4-Amino-1-phenyl-2(1H)-pyrimidinone has been shown to be effective against influenza virus type A and B, adenovirus, cytomegalovirus, Epstein Barr virus, and poliovirus. The drug has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of DNA and RNA by binding to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enzyme p2y receptors on the surface of cells. This inhibition prevents replication of viruses and slows down the progression of disease.
