DIDS is a quinone that inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential and produces cell death in neurons. DIDS is an inhibitor of the ryanodine receptor (RYR), which is a calcium channel found in cardiac muscle and skeletal muscle. The inhibition of the RYR by DIDS results in decreased levels of intracellular calcium ions, which leads to cell lysis and subsequent death. DIDS has also been shown to inhibit p-nitrophenyl phosphate (PNP) reduction, resulting in increased levels of intracellular Ca2+. This inhibition leads to higher intracellular Ca2+ levels that are toxic to cells. DIDS has been shown to be effective against k562 cells, a human erythroleukemia cell line, and anion-transporting ATPases.
