3,4,5-Trichlorobiphenyl is a polyhalogenated biphenyl that is a reactive chemical substance. It is used in the manufacture of synthetic materials, such as plastics and paints. 3,4,5-Trichlorobiphenyl has been shown to cause liver tumors in rats. It also inhibits the activity of cytochrome P450 in rat liver microsomes. The half-life of 3,4,5-trichlorobiphenyl in rat liver microsomes was found to be dependent on the presence or absence of cytochrome P450 and on the type of activating system. It may also cause cancer via activation by cytochrome P450 to form a reactive intermediate that reacts with guanine to produce 8-hydroxyguanine. This reaction results in DNA damage and mutations which can lead to cancerous cells.
