Methyl 3-methylquinoline-2-carboxylate is a ketone that is used in the synthesis of nothapodytine and mappicine. It can be synthesized by condensation of methyl 2-chloroquinoline-4-carboxylate with methyl 3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-2,4-dicarboxylate. The reaction sequence includes an acid catalyzed reaction to produce the desired product. Methyl 3-methylquinoline-2-carboxylate is also used as a precursor for synthesizing pyridones and ring systems. It can be deprotected by hydrolysis or oxidation to produce the desired products.
