Mebrofenin is an alkanoic acid that is used as a diagnostic agent to identify senescent cells in human serum and carboxy terminal esters. It has been shown to be a promising anti-cancer compound that inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA. Mebrofenin has also been used for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, including diagnosis and abdominal surgery.
Mebrofenin may be an effective anti-inflammatory agent because it inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting cyclooxygenase activity, which then prevents the production of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid. This makes mebrofenin a useful therapeutic agent for treating inflammation associated with inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis.
