5-(Benzyloxy)pentanal is a quinoline derivative that inhibits the enzyme reverse transcriptase, which is an extracellular enzyme that synthesizes DNA from RNA. It also inhibits nucleotide synthesis and interacts with other enzymes such as DNA polymerase. 5-(Benzyloxy)pentanal has been shown to inhibit tumor growth by inhibiting the production of cancer-related proteins. The compound was synthesized in a stereoselective manner by reacting piperidine with allyl bromide followed by oxidation to form the corresponding aldehyde. This method was used to produce an enantiomerically pure compound, which exhibits inhibitory activity against HIV-1 integrase.
