7-Fluoro-6-nitro-2H-1,4-benzoxazin-3(4H)-one (7FNB) is an herbicide that belongs to the class of nitroalkanes. It is used as a preemergence and postemergence herbicide for the control of weeds in wheat, soybeans, cotton, and other crops. 7FNB is most effective as a postemergence herbicide in soybeans and cotton. It has been shown to be effective against a wide range of weeds including morning glory, velvetleaf, pigweed, lambsquarters, cockleburr and knotweed. 7FNB inhibits the growth of plants by interfering with their metabolism. The alkynyl group on the molecule interacts with plant enzymes during photosynthesis and prevents translocation of carbohydrates from leaves to other parts of the plant. This leads to reduced chlorophyll production, nitrogen fixation and growth inhibition.
