2-Methylthiazolidine 4-carboxylic acid is a metabolite of nitrosamines and N-nitrosodiethylamine. It has been found to be an important component of the redox potential in biological systems. It also has clinical use as a chemotherapeutic agent for malignant brain tumors. 2-Methylthiazolidine 4-carboxylic acid has been shown to be stable in complexes with metal ions such as iron, copper, and zinc, although it is unstable with hydrogen peroxide. This compound can induce apoptosis by activation of death protein and release of cytochrome c from mitochondria. 2-Methylthiazolidine 4-carboxylic acid also has an extractant property that can be used for the analysis of urine samples.
