PCA has been shown to induce apoptosis in cells by activating the caspase-independent cell death pathway, which is mediated by activation of pro-apoptotic protein BAX. PCA has been found to inhibit tumor growth in xenograft models and also showed antiviral activity against HIV infection in vitro.
