Phenylaniline is a drug that inhibits the growth of trypanosomes, which are parasitic protozoa that cause African sleeping sickness. 4-Fluoro-3-phenylaniline (4FPA) binds to the active site of the enzyme glycolysis, inhibiting the conversion of glucose to pyruvate and preventing the formation of ATP. The average lethal dose for T. brucei, a species of trypanosome, is approximately 10 micrograms per milliliter in vitro. This may be due to its steric interactions with the enzyme and hydrophobic properties. Phenylaniline has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis through its interactions with cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes.
