1-Methyl-1H-pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyridine (1MPP) is a carboline compound that has been shown to have cytotoxic activity against tumor cell lines. 1MPP has been shown to inhibit the growth of p. falciparum and other species of malaria parasites in vitro by inhibiting protein synthesis. It binds to the enzyme carbolines hydrolase and inhibits the production of neocryptolepine (a neurotoxin), which causes apoptosis by increasing levels of survivin and cyclin B, which are proteins involved in cell cycle regulation. 1MPP also inhibits connective tissue growth factor, which is involved in wound healing.
