This material displays optical activity and can be observed using optical microscopy techniques such as bright field, dark field, polarized light microscopy, and optical coherence tomography. Diffraction from 2-bromo-5-dodecylthiophene shows the presence of dodecane rings at the molecular level. Ferroelectric properties are also exhibited by this material when it undergoes a phase transition to its helical form at around -14°C to -18
