2-Amino-2-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethan-1-ol is an optically active compound that is used in the industrial synthesis of other compounds. It has been shown to be a diastereomeric salt, with two different forms known as (S)- and (R)-2-amino-2-(naphthalen-2-yl)ethanone. This compound can be prepared by treating 2-aminonaphthalene with potassium hydroxide in an alkaline environment. The major use of this compound is in the preparation of pharmaceuticals, such as antihistamines or anticonvulsants. This compound is also used in the production of dyes, pigments, and perfumes.
