The peptide S-[(6S)-7-oxo-6-[[[(2R)-5-oxo-2-pyrrolidinyl]carbonyl]amino]-7-(phenylamino)heptyl] ethanethioate is a potent inhibitor of the phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of the second messenger cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), which has been shown to regulate many physiological processes including inflammation, cell proliferation and differentiation, and apoptosis. By reducing the level of cAMP, this peptide can be used to treat inflammatory diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The peptide also has inhibitory effects on ion channels and receptors, which may be useful in pharmacology research.
