3,5-Diformyl-4-hydroxy-benzoic acid methyl ester is a fluorescent probe that is used to measure the cytotoxicity of cancer cells and metal ions. It can be used as a sensor to detect cancer cells in vivo and in vitro by measuring the fluorescence intensity. 3,5-Diformyl-4-hydroxy-benzoic acid methyl ester has been shown to have higher sensitivity than other probes due to its photostability and high quantum yield. The probe is sensitive to metal cations, such as calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and nickel ions. 3,5-Diformyl-4-hydroxy-benzoic acid methyl ester can also be used for confocal fluorescence microscopy to monitor proton pumping during oxidative phosphorylation.
