(S)-Synphos is an asymmetric synthesis catalyst that is used in the production of (R)-synephos, a β-amino acid. This ruthenium complex can be used at room temperature and does not require any external base. The substrate molecule can be either a terminal alkynes or a β-unsaturated ketone. The reaction selectivity for this catalyst is excellent, encompassing both nucleophilic addition and reductive elimination reactions. The process has been shown to be highly selective for the formation of amides from water molecules. Synephos is insoluble in organic solvents and can be used to synthesize a variety of molecules with high yields.
