4-Hydroxy-8-methoxy-quinoline-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester is a quinoline derivative that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. 4HMCQM is also a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis and has been shown to be cytotoxic against leukemia cells. The mechanism of action behind this cytotoxicity is unknown, but it may be due to inhibition of ribosomal RNA synthesis or translation.
