It can be recycled by distilling off the solvent and then reacting it with water to form N,N'-dicyclohexyl-1,2-ethanediamine dihydrochloride. The optical properties of this compound are different from those of its parent compound due to the presence of two substituents on each nitrogen atom. This change in optical properties leads to a difference in absorption and diffraction patterns between these two compounds, which can be exploited for detection purposes.
