Ethyl glycidyl ether (EGEE) is a fluorescent probe that can be used to detect metal ions in solution. It is a biocompatible polymer that has been shown to have cell culture and coating properties. EGEE can be polymerized by ring-opening in the presence of heat or an acid, with the rate of polymerization dependent on the concentration of EGEE and the metal ion present. This chemical can also be used as a phase transition temperature probe for polymeric materials.
