6-Methylquinolin-2(1H)-one is a natural product that has been shown to have activity against cancer cells. It can be found in certain plants and fungi, but it is most commonly isolated from the seeds of the plant Oxytropis lambertiana. This compound has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of stomach cancer cells, and it may also have potential as a chemotherapeutic agent for other cancers. 6-Methylquinolin-2(1H)-one binds to DNA by coordination with phosphorus oxychloride ligands, which prevents transcription and replication of DNA. This mechanism is similar to that of cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum II), a common chemotherapeutic agent. 6-Methylquinolin-2(1H)-one has a hydrochloric acid chemotype, which means that it contains a chlorine atom bound to a hydrogen atom in its molecule.
