Hexadecane is a colorless, mobile liquid that is insoluble in water. It is an important component of gasoline and diesel fuels, as well as the starting material for many other chemicals. Hexadecyl ethers are the esters of hexadecanol and an acid. They are typically used as surfactants or emulsifiers in cosmetic products, such as creams and lotions. Hexadecyl ethers are also used to manufacture glycol ethers, which are primarily used as solvents in paints and coatings. Hexadecyl ethers have a phase transition temperature of about 82°C and react with hydrogen fluoride to produce a hexadecane-2-ol product.
