It has a molecular formula of CH3(CH2)5COOH. 3-Nonenoic acid is a colorless liquid at room temperature and pressure. 3-Nonenoic acid is not soluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents. It has a boiling point of about 114° C and a density of 1.05 g/mL at 20° C. 3-Nonenoic acid also has an odor that resembles the smell of green apples, oranges, or grapefruit rinds. 3-Nonenoic acid can be synthesized by reacting benzene with hydroxide, or it can be converted to malonic acid by alkali metal oxidation followed by the addition of malonic acid and condensation with hydrogenation and heptanal
