5,6-Dimethoxy-3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one is a mixture of five compounds that have been shown to have the ability to control the growth of plant roots. It has been found that 5,6-Dimethoxy-3,3-dimethylindanone can inhibit the release of ethylene from roots and also inhibit root growth in some plants. The other four compounds are 5,6-(E)-Methoxyindanone; 3-(E)-Ethylidenemalononitrile; 3-(Z)-Ethylidenemalononitrile; and 2-[(E) -Methoxyphenyl]-1-[(Z) -methylphenyl]ethene. These compounds are all polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are chemical compounds consisting of two or more fused benzene rings in a molecule
